If building the home of your dreams is still years away, why not love where you live right now? A small investment can make a tremendous difference in the amount of pleasure you experience during your leisure hours at home.
If you don’t plan to live in your present home forever, it certainly wouldn’t make sense to spend the money to turn it into an absolute palace. What you can do, though, is to convert at least one little corner of it into your idea of luxury living.
But Shouldn’t I Be Saving ALL My Extra Cash?
Instead of thinking about improvements, would it be wiser to instead put that money into your savings account for the dream home you plan to build someday? Perhaps, but there are also benefits to enhancing the house you know you’ll be living in for at least the foreseeable future:
- Some home improvements can increase the value of your home when you get ready to put it on the market.
- It’s a learning experience, allowing you to try out features now to help determine priorities for your future dream home and/or what modifications you’d want to make.
- Most importantly, instead of looking forward to all of those creature comforts in the future, you can begin enjoying some of them right now!
All the while that you are planning and saving for the future, you are living in the moment. Remember that old saying that ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’? The same could be said of working toward your dream home. Yes, you certainly need a savings plan in place that is designed to help you eventually reach your goal, but what about all those years between now and then?
Some people truly do not mind keeping their nose to the grindstone, and that’s great. For others, sacrificing every extra dime you make for some future dream can make it hard to stick to the plan.
How Can You Enjoy a Little Luxury Along the Way?
First of all, it doesn’t cost anything to shop around! If you’ve always wanted a pool look into the cost, and talk to a local realtor. A beautifully landscaped in-ground pool may not be the best option. Besides the cost, it’s permanent, and when you’re ready to sell it can be a deal breaker either way – most buyers either really want a pool or seriously do not want one. You also don’t want to price your home out of the neighborhood.
An above ground pool with an attractive but inexpensive deck could be an excellent alternative. It isn’t a huge investment, and it won’t eliminate future buyers who have no interest in swimming pools. You’ll also have the experience of finding out whether the on-going maintenance is something you don’t mind or can’t stand.
It’s a good idea to talk with a realtor before making any other enhancement to make to your home. A knowledgeable real estate agent can tell you whether you’ll get your money back when you sell.
What About Home Improvements That Don’t Increase Your Home’s Value?
No one likes unpleasant surprises. Before you spend any money, you do want to know whether you’ll get any of it back when you sell, but that may not be your deciding factor.
Let’s say you spend $2,000 for something you’ll enjoy for the next 5 years, and that it isn’t going to increase the value of your home by a nickel. What it boils down to is that you’re spending $400 a year for your own enjoyment. That’s a little over $33 a month – less than a nice dinner out for one person one time a month!
When you look at it that way, you may not care that you’ll never get your money back when you sell. For something you’ll enjoy every day, or even once a week or so, that’s a very small price to pay.
What’s On Your List of Most-Wanted Dream Home Features?
Your most feasible enhancements may depend on your particular floor plan and available space. If you have a spare bedroom or a basement, that can open up lots of possibilities. A few ideas might include turning an extra space into a game room or man cave or home gym. Add some cool new technology to your home for both security and the ultimate in convenience.
Home Sauna Kits
Are you a do-it-yourselfer? What about a home sauna? You can order it online today and put it together over the weekend. You’ll feel like the king or queen of your own little castle, but besides that, there are numerous health benefits to using a sauna.
Pictured at right is the JNH Lifestyles 2 Person Far Infrared Sauna 7 Carbon Fiber Heaters. Amazon has the best price on this sauna, but you’ll also find a lot of other models in various styles and in sizes to accommodate a single person or up to 4. Take a look, and you’ll find that when you do it yourself it’s probably a lot less expensive than you might have thought.
Your Own Personal Spa Bath
Or how about turning your ho-hum bathroom into a spa? If that sounds too extravagant and costly, remember you don’t have to go full scale. For your own personal spa bath, maybe you have room for a shower with multiple jet sprays or a scaled down jacuzzi tub. Install a heated floor or buy a towel warmer. Once you experience a heated floor you’ll never want to do without it again, especially if you live in a very cold climate.
Add the European luxury of a bidet, and if you don’t want to do plumbing and spend a fortune, there’s a great alternative. For just a few hundred dollars you can get a bidet toilet seat that is heated and remote controlled. (another little luxury that once you have it you’ll never want to live without it again!)
Create the feel of luxury with soothing décor, and create the experience of pampering with amenities like baskets of lotions and potions and beauty tools. Think of the last time you stayed in a classy hotel and what made the bath so appealing and pleasant. It isn’t hard to do this on a budget because so often, it’s the little things in life that we appreciate the most.
Do you love living outdoors?
What about a…
- Hot Tub
- Deck or Cabana
- Outdoor Kitchen
Does most of your leisure time revolve around your kids?
- Luxury Kids Playhouse
- Wooden Swing Set
Some of the things in those last two lists are improvements that you can enjoy now and take with you whenever you do move to your dream home. Even an outdoor kitchen doesn’t have to be permanent because you don’t need built-ins. There are plenty of options for freestanding cabinets, islands & sinks, grills, refrigerators and all manner of appliances.
So what are you waiting for? If you’re the kind of person who derives great pleasure from relaxing or entertaining at home in the evening and on weekends, a small investment can go a long way. You may not be living in your dream home yet, but you can make the digs you’ve got now a pleasant and inviting personal retreat from the crazy busy world outside.
